WingspanILM, our Wilmington-based ecumenical campus ministry, is headed into it’s third year working with students at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and now, Cape Fear Community College. Pastor Elizabeth Villegas has strived to foster an environment where students feel loved, valued, and safe.
Students head back to campus soon as move-in weekend is upon us, and classes quickly to start thereafter. With a first day of class photo opp, the Student Involvement Carnival, and move-in gift bags; Wingspan will make its presence known before the first official meeting!
Starting on August 27th as students join together for “Wings With Wingspan” night, Pastor Elizabeth Villegas will continue to lead, support, and equip students as they fellowship, eat, and learn together this academic year. While Pastor Elizabeth continues to provide pastoral support and leadership, a newly installed student leadership team along with a new intern will take the helm at directing this year’s ministry; including opportunities to play Pickleball and learn about supporting our Hispanic neighbors.
This year, Wingspan is excited to introduce a new ministry with and for students experiencing food scarcity. While it may seem like college students have an abundance of food opportunities, 30% of college students struggle with food insecurity and scarcity. Campus meals are expensive, and many living off campus do not purchase meal plans. While those who do live on campus are required to purchase meal plans, there are restrictions and costs do quickly add up.
A North Carolina Synod Grant from the Casey-Peeler fund will help provide an additional meal opportunity for students this year. Aimed to combat against both food insecurity and loneliness, in addition to a Sunday night gathering, this ministry will also provide gift cards or pantry staples for students throughout the year.
While most ministry opportunities at the start of the new semester will occur on campus, students will also have the option to venture off campus to a new study/ hangout area. We give thanks to Wesley Memorial, the pumpkin church, for providing their Wesley House for campus students to utilize this year. This is a shared space, but students are thankful for a place to go beyond their own rooms/ apartments and have renamed this place the “Cove.” With a kitchen, TV, and Wi-Fi, the Cove will continue to meet needs and help the growth of Wingspan.
WingspanILM is also blessed to have a dedicated board to help shape and grow this ministry. Recently, Meagan Kasack was elected and serves with Deacon Susan, along with other members from the UMC, PCUSA, and AME Zion Communities. If interested in serving on the board, speak to Deacon Susan.
How can you support Wingspan this year?
The easiest way is to provide a Wednesday Snack Meal! Sign-ups can be for physical meals, gift cards, or snacks!
Donate online or mail checks to 1012 Ryans Court, Wilmington NC 28412. Donations will support ministry needs, such as programming costs, fall retreat costs, and continue to provide meal opportunities in conjunction with the grant from NC Synod.
